Today it is early March and we have begun to have warmer days in Richmond, VA. How warm? In the mid 60's. But, that is perfect for us! Wood Decks and Wood Fences can be pressure-washed and sealed in these warmer temperatures. And, that is exactly what we have been doing!

This pretty deck was small, but the customer in the Wellesley Subdivision in Richmond, VA, wanted a contemporary look to her back deck. We gave it a good washing, stained it using Sherwin Williams solid stain, and the finish was quite lovely. 

Solid Colors, like these from Sherwin Williams are wonderful for old wood that is very worn. A solid stain can last for five years and you have a great variety of colors to choose from. I particularly like the solid stains from Sherwin Williams.

We use the Sherwin Williams Super Deck product quite often for older wood. The cleaning process is less intense, and easier on the wood.

All Aggregate Concrete Surfaces should be routinely cleaned to remove mold and mildew. After cleaning, a quality Acrylic or Petroleum-based water sealant should be used to protect concrete from moisture. Concrete must be dry before applying petroleum-based products. Acrylic water sealants may be applied to a lightly moist surface. 

After the sealant has dried, water is kept above the concrete's surface, as a layer of water-sealant creates a protective barrier. More expensive water sealants like Meadows or Sonneborn are generally going to be petroleum-based. These products will leave a shiny finish on concrete. Some call the appearance a "wet-look". This is beautiful, but it can be slippery sometimes when wet. 

Acrylics are not very noticeable, unless water splatters overtop the concrete surface. Then, some amount of pooling will be obvious. Moisture that seeps deep into the hair-line cracks can destablize the dirt under the concrete slab. This can potentially cause uneveness in driveway slabs. Seal concrete every three years to reduce the potential for cracking.

I want you to take a look at the transformation that we made take place at Southern Home when we laboriously refinished a deck that had not been loved for fifteen years. Boards had to be replaced, mold and mildew had to be removed, old finish had to be removed, broken pickets beneath the hand-rails needed to be repaired. What a job!

Above is an example of how somebody can get too close to wood on a deck or fence when they are Pressure-washing the wood. This is not a wanted outcome. You should be cleaning wood using a 25 degree tip. If you are inexperienced and you cut into your wood or somebody else's, you are going to need to fix a mistake like this. The only way is to use a 80 grit piece of sandpaper and when the wood is dry, lightly sand.

This kind of damage can be repaired with simple sanding. If the cuts were much deeper, there may be a need to replace the wood board where the damage occurred. All wood should be cleaned gently and efficiently, and the best way to do that is by applying gentle pressure during the cleaning process, using proper soaps and light chemicals, and then finishing with a high-quality water sealant.

Accidents do happen! The important thing to know is that an accident can be repaired, and understand that all wood can be made to look completely new again. Take a deep breath, shake off any negative feelings, and soon you will be enjoying a beautiful wood deck!

The following is a wooden deck with a beautiful Trellis in the Forest Hill Neighborhood, Richmond, VA 23225

The solid stain project came out looking great. This project took more stain than you would have thought. A total of four gallons to complete. If you try a project like this, do the proper steps to make your deck look as nice as possible. Prepare the surface by cleaning with the proper chemicals. Let the surface dry. Do not attempt to spray stain onto deck. Finish with brush and roller only. The results speak for themselves.

We recently cleaned and sealed a wooden fence in Woodland Heights, Richmond, VA. The product, "Ready Seal" cedar color was the choice. The oil base is one of the best products that can be used on wood. Oil helps to condition the wood and it invigorates and conditions the wood, bringing wood fibers closer to one and other and helping condition the wood.

Ready Seal brand water-sealant is one that has been offered in the Richmond, VA area for the past few years. I like this product a great deal more than many of the usual products sold in big box stores, because of the high content of Tung and Linseed oils!

Why does it even matter? Because Linseed Oil and Tung Oil are conditioners for new wood. They are natural oils that help strengthen new wood's natural fibers. They help strengthen the wood by causing the wood grains to pull together and moisture to dry on the outside of the wood. Many products lack these essential oils.
