What is the significance of cleaning concrete and sealing it? Well, for one, it makes the surface look clean and new. Secondly, it prevents moisture from seeping into the concrete. Sealants come in various materials and various grades. The products with the highest sheen have the most protection and are the best choice and generally are petroleum-based. The other products are Acrylic and still seal the pores of the cement very well. 

This is a small driveway with an Aggregate finish. You can literally see the product on the surface. In these pictures, I have already cleaned the driveway, I am only applying the sealant with a brush and roller. It should last three years.

I like this product, because of it's sheen and a light coloring that accentuates the wood color. We stripped and sanded the flooring of the deck first, then we sealed using Sikkens Cetol RE.

This was a project! This deck looked pretty rough when we first arrived to clean this wood deck. Then, to beautify the deck, we used Cabot solid stain with a rich red color, chosen by the customer. I love the way it turned out. This deck took two gallons of solid paint to help in covering the white pickets. Money well spent.

Cleaning and Staining a Home with SIKKENS Cetol SRD in Richmond, VA by Southern Home

This is why staining a home with Cetol SRD to match the wood deck is so much fun. It took us three days to paint this modern home with this specialized product. One coat will last a few years. We first clean the house using a pressure-washer and we spray the house down with a solution of detergent, TSP and bleach. 

Afterwards, we are left with a beautiful finish to begin applying this special stain and sealant made by SIKKENS. It is a premium product for a premium customer.

Australian Timber Oil by Cabot on a deck with new wood. We had the great pleasure of applying this product to the wood deck's surface outside of Richmond, VA when we were called by a customer in Chase City, VA. It was a bit of a drive and I was certainly in awe of the beauty of Virginia's countryside. It was a peaceful day and the pictures speak for themselves.

Here we are with a customer I have worked for for over twenty years. We are cleaning a wood deck that has stain on it. I have always used Cedar stain on this deck in the past. I have always used the Olympic Cedar stain which is also called Natural-tone. 

This deck is dirty with mold and mildew, but the real problem is in removing the stain that is underneath the mold and mildew. It can only be done by cleaning the deck with a stain-stripper.

This is a nasty and dirty deck. Mold and mildew work on the surface to destroy the integrity of the wood.

As I begin to pressure-wash the surface, I uncover the clean wood underneath. I can not achieve this without using a stain-stripping solution. 

 

But, with hard work, you can see how nice the final result becomes. At this point I can use a clear product or I can use a stain.

Wood dries and soon we will apply a clear water-sealant. I wish the picture
was a better one. At the end of the day, most was shaded and I could not take a picture that showed off how clean each board looks.

If you have never used a colored stain on your wood deck, the cleaning is a more simple one. If there has been a stain on the deck in the past, you cannot clean with my simple solution of bleach and laundry detergent. All sinple sealants that are clear are easy to clean by using bleach to kill mold and mildew growth. Mixture is put on first, let to set for ten minutes, then an intensive washing is given by using pressure wash tip over every square inch of the deck "with the grain". Another spray of the bleach and soap chemical bath is left on deck to encourage it to brighten up and look fresh. That is washed off of the deck and a day later, clear or tinted sealant or stain is applied.
